West Midlands
Quick Links:
Deanery websiteThe West Midlands covers a large geographical area from Stoke in the north to Hereford in the south, from Shrewsbury in the west to Rugby in the east. It encompasses the medical schools of Birmingham, Warwick and Keele, and well over 20 medium-to-large NHS and Foundation Trusts, and serves an area of approximately 5.4 million people.
The large population centres around Birmingham, Coventry, Wolverhampton and Stoke are all diverse and exciting places to live and work, with some of the best leisure amenities in the UK. These areas contrast with the more rural parts of the region, where healthcare is based around quieter market towns.
Specialty training in the West Midlands can thus offer training that is challenging and can be diverse in content and setting.
The West Midlands Postgraduate School of Medicine was the first to be established in the UK, and has prospered through a strong partnership between the RCP and the Deanery.
The School has been richly supported by the energies of the many physicians in our region with specific educational expertise and enthusiasm, and is well placed to deliver for this region the aspirations of the RCP and GMC for modern, curriculum-based postgraduate education in the medical specialties.
